10 Reasons Authors Love She Writes Press

Heart

SWP was founded with a heart-felt mission, to support those writers who are looking for equal access in a publishing ecosystem that favors brand and author platform over story and content. We approach what we do with the authors’ interests at heart, and our desire to help authors succeed drives everything we do.

Sisterhood

No other press encourages its authors to get to know each other through cohort calls, events, and a private Facebook group as She Writes Press does. Our authors’ access to and support of one another is often cited as one of the most meaningful parts of our authors’ publishing experience.

Flexibility

SWP is more flexible and accommodating of our authors than any traditional entity can be. As a woman-run company, we’re conscious of tending to our authors’ best interests, and we make reverting rights and pursuing opportunities for success easy for our authors by not asserting unnecessary control.

Design

SWP’s award-winning cover program, led by industry veteran Julie Metz, sets our press apart. We know the genres into which we publish, follow the publishing trends, and work closely with authors to ensure that we’re serving their best interests, bearing in mind what works in the market—even when that entails some tough-love conversations with authors to get to the best end result for their books.

Advocacy

SWP believes that books should be judged on their merit, and not by how a book is published, or whatever other arbitrary measure the industry wants to assert matters. Publisher Brooke Warner spearheaded an Advocacy Committee during her tenure at the Independent Book Publishers Association (a Committee that Associate Publisher Lauren Wise continues to sit on) and has written countless articles advocating for indie authors and indie publishing.

Access

Opening doors for our authors has been one of the singular most important goals and efforts of SWP since Day One. We believe and know that our authors’ books rival and exceed their traditional counterparts—and we have the traditional distribution and sales to back that up. These past ten years have seen us win a series of mini-battles for legitimacy in the industry, and as we celebrate ten we can proudly say that we’ve arrived, and our authors and success of their books are all the proof we need.

Giving Back

SWP gives back through our STEP (She Writes Press and SparkPress Toward Equality in Publishing program) which supports two writers of color each year to publish on our press. Biannually we also contribute to programs we believe in that are doing good in the world of publishing. Past recipients of these gifts include BINC, We Need Diverse Voices, World Reader, and Girls Writes Now, among others.

Opportunities

SWP is always on the lookout for opportunities for our authors, including selling foreign, audio, and movie rights, as well as educational opportunities to support our authors to better understand the industry and thrive in a very competitive publishing space. We pursue every outlet we can to bring exposure to our authors through displaying at festivals and conferences, to advertising, to supporting our authors to pursue opportunities on their own and together with their fellow sister authors.

Quality

The quality of our books speaks for itself. From cover design to interior to all of the many moving parts it takes to run a tight publishing ship, we ensure that our authors have a final book they’ll be proud of now and for years to come. We adhere to the Independent Book Publishers Association’s Industry Standards Checklist, a list that publisher Brooke Warner had a hand in authoring.

Openness

Lack of transparency is commonplace in this industry, so Publisher Brooke Warner founded SWP on a value of letting authors inside the publishing process. SWP does this through education, access to reporting, and always explaining the confusing parts of publishing—from royalty reports, to returns, to the distribution cycle, and much more. SWP prides itself on its authors entering its ranks with their eyes wide open about expectations, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

JANUARY

10 Reasons Why She Writes Press Is the Gold Standard in Hybrid Publishing

Curation

SWP has a two-step submissions process that ensures high-quality projects, and yet unlike traditional publishing, we vet submissions for the quality of the writing, not for the author’s brand or following.

Distribution

SWP has traditional distribution through Ingram Publisher Services, which means we have a sales force preselling our authors’ books to national accounts and bookstores, and ensures that our books are widely available wherever books are sold.

Community

SWP authors love the community of other She Writes Press sisters who are connected online and offline, offering support through the publishing process and beyond.

Education

Publishing with SWP is a bigger endeavor than just putting a book into the world. Our authors learn the ropes, have regular access to educational programs, and are encouraged to be partners and collaborators in the publishing process.

Reputation

SWP burst onto the publishing scene in 2012, and 10 years later we continue to lead the hybrid publishing pack with our beautiful books, strong sales track, and fabulous reputation with retailers, book-buyers, librarians, and reviewers.

Royalties

SWP authors are entrepreneurial partners who invest up front, and whose royalty payouts are commensurate with that financial investment. Our authors retain 60% of net on print and 70% of net on ebooks, some of the highest royalty rates in the industry.

Expertise

Led by Publisher Brooke Warner, who brings 22 years of experience to the table, 13 of those years in traditional publishing, SWP is committed to upholding and exceeding traditional standards. Creative Director Julie Metz, an industry veteran of 30+ years, spearheads our award-winning design program.

Rights

SWP pursues and sells all manner of subrights for our authors—foreign, film, audio, and more. We’re always growing our contact list and looking for new opportunities for our titles to have greater visibility and opportunities across a variety of creative mediums and forms.

Transparency

SWP’s transparency is core to our very identity. We provide authors with unprecedented amounts of information, reporting, and access to everything from sales to subrights opportunities to our creative process. We work to set expectations and support authors to achieve their goals without promising the impossible, which is why we have so many loyal and repeat authors.

Longevity

As SWP hits its 10-year anniversary in 2022, we’re stronger than ever with a backlist of 900+ titles, countless award-winning books, and a stake in continuing to disrupt the industry by leveling the playing field for authors.
